Unsustainable?

Ok–I admit that I have been asleep on this one.  The City of Colorado Springs is working on an area Sustainability Plan.  That sounds innocuous enough–until you discover the real agenda behind it.  That agenda is the United Nations Agenda 21:

Behind this agenda lies the Malthusian idea that population is expanding faster than resources.   The idea is a cousin to the development of Eugenics and we still live with the curse of abortion as a result of Margaret Sanger’s development of Planned Parenthood.  Of course, Malthus first proposed this theory in the 17oo’s and evidence has proved it wrong–but let’s not let truth interfere with a good power grab!

Worse yet for this theory, the Economist even acknowledges that population growth is slowing dramatically as countries become wealthy under capitalistic systems.  Staying true to the Left, the final paragraph reverts back to Global Warming–wait the new word is Climate Change — no now it is Sustainable Development to show that this curb in population growth is not enough.  After all the science of man-made global warming is Overwhelming–NOT!

America has lived under the Free-market Capitalistic system for over 200 years (less so in the last 80 years–but that’s another blog).  Population growth in all wealthy societies is decreasing and suddenly we are not sustainable? Let’s see how the Colorado Springs Sustainability and the Pikes Peak Regional Sustainability Plan will change all that.

The plan opens by introducing over 100 “Focus Groups” involved in the plan.  Nothing is more inviting to a developer than knowing they must satisfy a huge group of Do Gooders concerned citizens!  Next the plan announces its Stretch Goals for Agriculture, which include:

 3. The number of regional farmers and food producers has increased by 100%.
4. More people in the region have the opportunity to grow and choose to grow their own food.

Do they not realize we live in an Alpine Desert?  If Sam Kinison were still alive he would be screaming–“We have deserts in America, we just don’t FARM IN THEM AHHHHHHH!”  Do they really want us going back to growing our own food?

Next are the Arts with implementation of their Cultural Plan.  I love it when the Government is dictating the arts–then we get such great artistic achievements as the Piss Christ paid for by the National Endowments for the Arts and winner of awards in the visual arts.

I will leave it for the reader to go through the rest of the plan.  Needless to say it is very politically correct in all areas–Economic Development, Education, Energy, Transportation and Water.  A real utopia.

Capitalism has a very unique idea called PROFIT.  The idea of PROFIT is that any creator of wealth must acquire resources on the open market: labor, electricity, land, materials.  And combine them into a new product.  If that product is not more valuable than the consumption of all of those resources–if you don’t make a profit–then you have wasted those resources and the business will fail.  The idea of PROFIT is a social good that ensures resources are not wasted and that innovation (using resources even more efficiently) keeps improving over time.  In short, it keeps the economy sustainable over time!

The government bid to trump the profit motive is killing the Sustainability crowd–as Solyndra, Ener1, and the Green Car demonstrate.  This Sustainability movement is based on the false premise that our economy is unsustainable–because they don’t understand the free-market system.  Please e-mail our City Government  with the message that the only thing unsustainable is big government wasting resources on sustainability plans–can we have sensible and efficient instead?

It’s Spending, Stupid!

1 Kings 21: 1-10 (Updated for 2011)

1 Now Citizens had incomes in a Free Market near the palace of Obama, President of the United States. 2 Obama said to the Citizens in 2010, “Give me your income, that I may have it for my programs.  I will give you a fairer climate to conduct your affairs.”  3 But the Citizens said to Obama, “The Lord forbid that I should give you my income and doom the inheritance of my children” and defeated his members in an election.  4 And Obama went into his house vexed and sullen because of what the Citizens had said to him; for they had said,”I will not give you the inheritance of my children.”  And he lay down and turned away his face and would not campaign.

5 But the Unions came to him and said, “Why is your spirit so vexed that you will not campaign?”  6 And he said to them, “Because the Citizens will not give me the inheritance of their children for the programs I have promised.” 7 And the unions his partner said to him, “Do you now govern America? Arise and campaign, let your heart be cheerful; we will give you the income of the Citizens.”

8 So the unions prompted many groups to select a few among the Citizens, the ‘rich’, and a city that all will know.  9 And they wrote in the letters, “Proclaim a day of rage and set the ‘rich’ on high among the people; 10 and set many base fellows opposite those Citizens saying, ‘You have cursed America and Obama!’  Then take them to the election in 2012 and end them once and for all in the name of fairness!”

You can read the story of Ahab and Jezebel to see how it ends–or–you can become involved and change the ending for our country.  Capitalism is under assault.  It has been assaulted by big government that implemented Crony Capitalism and now is under assault from the mob called Occupy Wall Street.

It is really quite simple, the federal government alone collects revenue of $7,000 for every man,  woman and child in America (an outrageous amount).  It in turn spends $12,300 for every man, woman and child.  Leading to a $1.5 Trillion deficit each year.   Taxing the “RICH” will not solve this problem.

Take Warren Buffet as an example.  He recently released his income saying he paid only 17% in taxes.  His income was $63 Million before deductions and $40 Million after deductions; he paid $7 Million in taxes.  Now suppose he paid at the new rate (which I don’t think the administration has ever announced but most agree it is 39%) on all income with no deductions.  This would amount to $24 Million (63 * 0.39) or an increase of $17 Million over what he actually paid.  How many Warren Buffet-like incomes are needed at these rates to balance the budget?

88,500 Warren Buffet incomes with
No Deductions and Taxed at 39%!

The problem is we only have a few Warren Buffet-like incomes.  Taxing the “RICH” will clearly not solve the problem.  It is CLASS WARFARE!

The leader of this greedy government has now set upon a tried and true scheme.  Villainize a small group to rouse the public into a mob assault on that group and then turn your attention to the real prize.  Once these “RICH” are defeated–who will stand against such a mob?  It is not the “rich” income that is needed–it is yours!

We have a simple message our politicians must heed–It’s spending, stupid!

Proposition 103–Just Say No

Prop 103 was defeated 64% No to 36% Yes.  Congratulations Colorado!

To quote Herman Cain, “They think you’re stupid!

Proposition 103 proposes to increase the Colorado state income tax to 5% and increase the sales tax to 3%–but only for five years–trust us.

Now suppose you’re running a used car business, the economy has turned sour and cars are not selling.  Do you increase the price of the cars to get more revenue?  No–you lower the price to increase sales and hope to still make a profit to live on.  So why don’t politicians get this very simple concept?  If you lower taxes, you will increase business and gain more revenue!  It has worked every time it was tried.

Arguably, President Reagan was the largest tax cutter in our lifetime.  During his time in office, revenue to the government increased by 75% from $517B when Carter left office in 1980 to $909B at the end of 1988 (http://www.gpoaccess.gov/usbudget/fy10/hist.html).  But what do we always hear about? The DEFICITS!  That’s because politicians always spend more than they take in.  So stop giving them more money.

In the terms of Nancy Reagan, “JUST SAY NO!”

By the way, the schools are not in trouble.  If you want a brief accounting of how educational spending is wasted, visit here (which is from 2000–notice how there is never enough money).  And if you want to see that only a little over half (58%) of the D49 budget gets to the classroom visit here.  Then “JUST SAY NO!”

The Real Union Message

By focusing on the harsh language used by Jimmy Hoffa in his Labor Day speech, most people missed the real message.   He welcomed the President to Detroit “where he sees the real America.”  Since 1962, Detroit has elected mayors only from the Democratic party (there were only 6 Dems elected from 1900 to that point).  To see the “real America” touted by the Teamsters, take a few minutes to watch this video.

What did Mr Hoffa say the Unions are fighting for?

  1. Collective bargaining for Public Employees
  2. Opposing the right to work laws (in Michigan)
  3. Bringing jobs back to America

Let’s evaluate:  Over 50% of union workers are now in the public sector.  Most states and many cities are near bankrupt largely due to pension plans “negotiated”  through Public Union collective bargaining.  If you watched the movie mentioned above, you’ve already witnessed the destruction of the American Auto Industry as explained further here.  Public Union dues fund Democrats who then give Unions whatever they want and pay for it by raising taxes.  Taxes are now so high, voters have stopped voting for increased taxes.

Right to work (RTW) forces the unions to compete on an even playing field.  In the distant past, a union worker was better skilled and handled dangerous heavy machinery that made him the most productive worker in the world.  That is no longer the case as lamented by the Economist.  States providing unions a monopoly on work have the largest budget problems as economic activity dwindles and the population moves out.

Bringing jobs back to America has largely to do with the cost of labor, taxes and regulation.  As pointed out in the paragraphs above, union activity does not increase worker productivity or lower the cost of production.  An earlier blog listed US corporate taxes among the highest in the industrial world at 36%.   It is difficult to see how union success will bring jobs back to America since it is largely their success to this point that drove jobs out.

Jimmy Hoffa stated he wanted one thing–“jobs, jobs, jobs…”  If that is his true goal, he should use those union dues to train his workers to again be the most productive in the world instead of squandering it attempting to elect big government Democrats who will bankrupt the country  with flawed economic policy.

The real message to voters is very clear, you can side with the angry union’s push for big government to pay high wages for low productivity led by the Obama team OR you can vote for smaller, more efficient government, personal liberty, and a more prosperous nation for everyone.

PS–10 of the top 15 donors to political campaigns are unions with contributions of over $330 Million  (this excludes #1 ActBlue and the #7 Trial Lawyers)–all solidly Democrat!

A Weedy Nation

It has been a hectic week: Congress passed the “Budget Control Act of 2011” which increases the debt by $7 Trillion in ten years, the stock market reacted to that and Japanese and European Central Bank moves by selling off between 6 to 10% of their value, Standard and Poor’s downgraded US Debt from AAA to AA+ and I had to do yard work!

It was while pulling weeds and turning up bad patches to plant new seed that a passing neighbor put it all in perspective saying, “It’s amazing how much effort it takes to grow grass but weeds will spread no matter how neglected.”   It struck me that virtue–the characteristic of being morally good–has been lost in the public square.

Virtuous neglect has caused us to become a WEEDY nation!

According to the Catholic Catechism, personal sin gives rise to social situations and institutions that are contrary to divine goodness.  “Structures of sin” result from personal sin and lead their victims to do evil and produce “social sin”.  So we have social sin as opposed to divine goodness (a term harder to define but attempts are found here and here).

So let us look at personal sin and see where it exhibits itself in our social institutions.  The seven deadly sins and their contrary virtues are:

Deadly Sins

Contrary Virtues

Pride (Hubris)

Humility

Greed

Liberality

Lust

Chastity

Wrath

Meekness

Gluttony

Temperance

Envy

Brotherly Love

Sloth

Diligence

America has an agency (or perhaps two or three) for any conceived problem.    She enters wars and lectures nations on goodness.  Even Bill Maher is fed up with American hubris.  Can America realize it cannot solve all problems, alleviate all pain and return to humbly performing basics of government as outlined in the Constitution?

Greed is an excessive desire and pursuit of wealth, status, and power.  Is that not the definition of politics today?  The government takes in over $2 Trillion per year (~$7,000 for every man, woman and child in the US) but spends an additional 40%.   Can liberality in the classic sense allow room for the individual to decide the best use of income?

Lust is the centerpiece of advertising, sticoms and movies.  Need we recount all of the indiscretions on both sides of the aisle?  I am in favor of public funding on Chastity Belts for our politicians.  The belts are administered before leaving for DC and they don’t get the key until they come home!

Arizona–and now Alabama–are witnessing the wrath of governments for passing a law to control illegal immigration.  Gluttony?  Going go to the beach hurts your eyes!   Envy in the public square takes the form of “tax the rich”–the government obviously has a superior moral use of money than any “rich” person does.  After all, those social institutions created to buy votes help the poor need money!  Trillions are spent on the poor and they have gotten poorer as a result of government programs.  This is well documented in Losing Ground.  And finally sloth–why not wait until the very last day to pass a “deficit reduction” bill?

Political correctness has developed its own stigma to reverse that formerly attached to moral virtue.  If you believe out-of-wedlock births are a problem, you’re racist!  Believe homosexuality to be unnatural and a sin, you’re a homophobe!   Believe the government is spending too much and refuse to increase the debt limit, you are terrorists!

Without doing the work of putting virtue back into the public debate, we are allowing the ugly weeds to take over the landscape and starve the reforms our country requires.

Irony Knows No Bounds

“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies.

Over the past 5 years, our federal debt has increased by $3.5 trillion to $8.6 trillion. That is “trillion” with a “T.” That is money that we have borrowed from the Social Security trust fund, borrowed from China and Japan, borrowed from American taxpayers. And over the next 5 years, between now and 2011, the President’s budget will increase the debt by almost another $3.5 trillion.

Numbers that large are sometimes hard to understand. Some people may wonder why they matter. Here is why: This year, the Federal Government will spend $220 billion on interest. That is more money to pay interest on our national debt than we’ll spend on Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. That is more money to pay interest on our debt this year than we will spend on education, homeland security, transportation, and veterans benefits combined. It is more money in one year than we are likely to spend to rebuild the devastated gulf coast in a way that honors the best of America.

And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on.

Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America’s priorities.”

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt
March 16, 2006

PS–He voted NO on increasing the debt ceiling!
